この小規模な彫刻は、広島と宮島の海岸沿いで
収集された拾得物を集めたものです。

円形の竹の輪の上に流木の板が置かれ、その中に野球ボールがわずかに埋まって逆さまになっており、重力に抵抗しているように見えます。

この作品は、有機的な瓦礫と高度にコード化されたオブジェクトを並置しています。アメリカ文化の象徴である野球は、ここでは戦争、占領、ソフトパワーなど、広島の複雑に絡み合った歴史の凝縮されたシンボルとなっています。

しかし、それは展示されるのではなく、沈み込み、拘束され、半分消えてしまいます。 構図はバランスと垂直性を重視しています。コンパクトなフォルムにもかかわらず、この彫刻は軽さと重さ、吊り下げと埋没との間の緊張感を保っています。アーティストの他の作品と同様、拾ってきたものの使用は残渣の詩学を裏付けています。

そこでは、収集され、風化し、または廃棄されたものが記憶と静かな抵抗のベクトルになります。

What Remains, Suspended

Driftwood, bamboo ring, baseball, seaweed (Hiroshima, Miyajima), 2025

This small-scale sculpture assembles found materials collected along the shores of Hiroshima and Miyajima. A driftwood plank rests atop a circular bamboo ring, inside which a baseball — slightly buried and turned upside down — appears to resist gravity.

The work juxtaposes organic debris with a highly coded object: the baseball, icon of American culture, becomes here a condensed symbol of Hiroshima’s entangled histories — war, occupation, soft power. Yet rather than being displayed, it is sunken, constrained, half-disappeared.

The composition plays on balance and verticality. Despite its compact form, the sculpture holds tension between lightness and weight, suspension and burial. As in other works by the artist, the use of found matter affirms a poetics of residue — where what is gathered, weathered, or discarded becomes a vector of memory and quiet resistance.
